Funding Alert: ‘Graywalkers: Purgatory’ The next awesome strategy RPG

Awhile ago I started getting into strategy RPGs, specifically ‘Shining Force’. I downloaded an emulator and started playing, because it had been recommended to my by my brother. It was a charming little RPG, with cute little characters and terrible translations. But what kept me playing was its awesome strategy element.

Nowadays, games have been kicked up a few notches. Graphics are better, physics are realistic, translations are sometimes just as terrible. But most of these assets have been funneled into other types of games such as first person shooters.

So along came this new game. So new, it’s still on Kickstarter. It’s not only a strategic RPG, but it also features a post apocalyptic vibe which is hot right now. It’s called ‘Graywalkers: Purgatory’, and it should fill that void where you crave strategy. Here’s some pertinent information, direct from their website:

Graywalkers: Purgatory is the first in a series of Emergent Strategic and Tactical Turn-based 3D Role-Playing Games set in a stylish supernatural post-apocalyptic world, where parts of Heaven, Hell and Earth have merged together in an event called “The Rupture”.

  • A Strategic Turn-based RPG with features inspired by XCom, Fallout, & Jagged Alliance.
  • Play in a dynamic emergent world where your actions actually change the world
  • Find, Recruit and Lead your 36 Graywalkers from over 50+ NPCs: each with their own style, background, abilities and personality
  • Strategically manage your resources, people, technology, and magic
  • As the prophesied leader, unite the lands of Purgatory under your banner and lead the war to reclaim the world for humanity

I downloaded the pre-alpha combat demo and played around with it for awhile. (BTW – this is being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux, so no matter what your fave is, you can have a go at this.) I got my butt handed to me as I learned the controls (which, admittedly, are very easy and I wondered why I had an issue with them), but I enjoyed every minute of it.

There are various ways to take out your enemies, from bombs to guns to good ol’ fashioned fists. The graphics are great, especially for a pre-alpha demo. The enemies were tough, but very balanced. The same can be said for your team. I didn’t feel that anything was under or overpowered, especially when you play the different classes the way they were meant to.

As of this writing, GWP has 3 days and less than $2500 to go on its Kickstarter. I hope it gets funded, because I’m having an awesome time with the demo, and I’d LOVE to see a complete version of the game. So if you’d like to check it out yourself, would like to donate, or just share this with your friends, we could take them over the limit and have this awesome game to look forward to!
